Contemporary Art at Historic Northampton Call to Artists

Contemporary Art at Historic Northampton

Call to Artists

Historic Northampton, in collaboration with The Northampton Center for the Arts and A.P.E., is offering an exciting opportunity to contemporary artists. Artists are invited to submit a proposal to show work drawing on or inspired by selected objects from the museum's permanent collection. This successful program is entering its second year, marking Historic Northampton as a destination for art and history lovers alike. The museum is also part of Northampton's monthly Arts Night Out.

Artists who would like to apply for a show at Historic Northampton are required to first visit Historic Northampton to view the designated gallery space as well as selections from the permanent collection. Hours for the museum are Wed.-Sat. 10-4 and Sunday, 12-5. Applicants are also encouraged to conduct preliminary research from the museum's online catalogue. The museum's wide-ranging collection covers the 17th to the 21st centuries and includes photographs, documents, manuscripts, fine art, furniture, ceramics, glass, metals, toys, tools, textiles and costumes.

Submissions for solo and group shows/installations will be considered for October 2015 through June 2016. Two and Three dimensional work in all mediums will be considered. Shows run approximately one month and are tied to the monthly Arts Night Out schedule. The gallery dimensions are: 10.5' x 22.75' (there is a 5' wide doorway into the gallery at one end of one of the long walls). Access to objects and more detailed research from the rest of the collection will be available to artists after acceptance of proposals.

The deadline for submitting proposals is May 15, 2015.

Proposals should include the following:
  • A written proposal and/or Artist/Curator statement.
  • Approximately 8-10 digital images on CD (more accepted for group shows). CDs must be readable in both Mac and PC format. Images must be JPEGS at 72dpi with the largest dimension set to 1500 pixels. Please label the CD with your name, address, phone number or email address, and a list of images.
  • A resume.
  • Any other appropriate supporting material.
  • Please indicate in your application whether you wish to have your work returned.

All questions please contact: Stan Sherer at: stansherer@historic-northampton.org
