The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

For a weekend of performances, dancing and panel discussions, SCDT has gathered together an historic group of performance artists and writers from across the globe, including choreographer, author, dance critic and former editor of Dance magazine Wendy Perron; author, internationally renowned improvisation teacher and Chief Editor of Contact Quarterly Nancy Stark Smith; New York City artist and School of Hard Knocks-founder Yoshiko Chuma; Berlin-based artist and Professor of Dance at Kunst University Peter Pleyer; Amherst College Theater and Dance Director Wendy Woodson; author and Professor of Dance at Middlebury and visiting lecturer Smith Colleges, Andrea Olsen; and the Northampton-based performance artist Aretha Aoki.

Fundraiser for Serious Play! Theatre Ensemble

John Sheldon, long-time Serious Play! collaborator and musician/composer extraordinaire, is presenting his newest work in Northampton for the first time, as a fundraiser for Serious Play! Theatre Ensemble.

"My Journey to the Center of the Earth," a dramatic monologue with music, written and performed by John Sheldon, is coming to A.P.E. Gallery, at 126 Main Street, Northampton, in November. Three evenings at 7:30 pm: Saturday, Nov 14 / Sunday, Nov 15 / Monday, Nov 16.

Come to Arcadia for a morning of creativity and reconnection with yourself. Learn the rudiments of drawing, design, composition, and the techniques of water-based painting on gessoed paper and canvas. Each class will include instruction, demonstrations, and studio time. Cost includes all supplies and instruction for six classes. 
About the Instructor: Jan Ruby-Crystal has been an art educator for 36 years. During her long career as a University Professor she taught classes in 2-D design, painting, drawing, papermaking, printmaking, book arts, metal smithing, and digital photography and design. Her own artwork has melded into a multi-media mix of her skills with an emphasis on imagery from nature. Her work can be seen at Happy Valley in Northampton.

This class will concentrate on the visual, intellectual, and intuitive elements, which all create a strong image. This workshop is open to anyone looking for new ways to see - to explore photographic vision in depth. You will learn to increase your visual awareness and use your camera/ lens intuitively to connect, compose, enhance, and expand your mindfulness and personal vision. Capture the essence and magic of landscapes. Experience creating a sense of place in nature with your images.

Biennial Poetry Reading at Forbes Library

The inaugural Northampton Arts Council’s Biennial Poetry Reading will take place on October 26, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The reading will be held in the Hosmer Gallery at Forbes Library in Northampton. Northampton’s own poet laureate, Patrick Donnelly, is emceeing the event and refreshments will be served.

Inaugural Poet Laureate Reading

On Sunday, November 1, at 4:00 PM, Patrick Donnelly will give the inaugural Poet Laureate reading of his term, sponsored by the Gallery of Readers Series. The reading will take place at Neilson Browsing Room, Neilson Library, Smith College, 7 Neilson Drive, Northampton, Massachusetts. Google Maps Link

The reading will conclude with the first event of Donnelly’s Choral Poem Project, a performance of Albert Goldbarth’s poem “Library” given by a spoken-word choir comprised of a diverse group of people from the Northampton area.

The event will be free, but donations will be accepted to further the work of the Poet Laureate.
