A Good Night’s Sleep Monthly Screening Series

A Good Night’s Sleep
Monthly Screening Series
Experimental film and video by artists connected to Western MA

A Good Night’s Sleep is a monthly screening series featuring experimental, documentary, and essay films by artists connected to Western MA, including a wide spectrum of aesthetics and approaches. Each screening is composed of films that when placed together form dynamic conversations and interconnectivity: sometimes works reflect each other, sometimes they spark opposition. We see these film screenings as a route to challenge hegemonic perspectives, and to support the work of a broad range of artists.

February is the 1 year anniversary of our screening series, we will be celebrating after the screening!

This month’s program will take place on February 25th 2017
@ Studio 4 at SCDT (4th floor, 25 main st, Northampton) starting at 8pm.
Admission $7-10. The screening will include the following artists:

Unidentified Woman by Jodi Colella at Historic Northampton

Unidentified Woman is an exhibition in response to the collections of Historic Northampton by Boston based artist Jodi Colella.
WHERE: Historic Northampton 46 Bridge Street, Northampton, MA 01060
WHEN:  March 10 - April 9, 2017
Opening Reception: Arts Night Out, Friday, March 10 5-8 pm
Gallery Talk: Margaret BruzeliusSunday, April 2 2pm
Jodi Colella engages with headwear and daguerreotypes from the museum's collections and responds to forces that have shaped women's identities since the 18th century.  From the poke bonnet to the hijab women in particular have been subjugated by fashion dictates and social norms. Colella's headwear sculptures become a vehicle for a subversive coded language addressing the play between women's visibility and invisibility.

The show's title, Unidentified Woman, refers to the poignant anonymity of the daguerreotypes of women whose names and identities have been long forgotten. Mirroring larger cultural forces, Colella stitches together past and present identity politics to provide an alternative chronology where expression replaces suppression and sewing equals activism.

In Unidentified Woman Colella fuses her personal experience with her ideology to create work that contributes to the progress of both art and feminism.

No Matter the Odds: the tinydance project documentary release and fundraising event

February 4th at 7pm at Renew Pilates Studio in the Eastworks Building in Easthampton! The evening will begin with appetizers, drinks, and mingling, followed by the premiere of the documentary that 406 Up Films made about our 2015-2016 season, called, "No Matter the Odds: the art-making and life-making of the tinydance project," and will include a discussion forum with the tinydance collaborators and 406 Up filmmakers. You'll get a chance to see the inner workings of the project, with photos from its inception to today, and ridiculous outtakes from the film. In the past few years we have run traditional crowdfunding-style fundraisers, and our hope with this event is to raise the remainder of necessary funds for the tour so that we can spend the spring focused on creative process.

Mac Everett has responded to encounters with the natural world by creating small, hand-made books. They include reflections on mountains, plants, seasons, weather, people, animals, lakes, and rivers. Sources for inspiration are both local and exotic. Most books are collections of haiku; some are brief narratives. Come prepared to sit and read for a bit from a mobile library of works, many of which will fit in a single hand.

“I take time to sit quietly and try to focus on the subtleties and small beauties. I have often asked myself: “How can I use words to capture this special moment in nature?”

Northampton-based electronic duo and 2017 BJ Goodwin Award recipients BOY HARSHER embark on a one month U.S Tour beginning today.

This January, the Northampton Arts Council awarded Jae Matthews & Augustus Muller $750 to support Boy Harsher's Winter Tour, a total of thirty shows in the span of thirty-five days and over eight thousand miles. A limited run of one hundred prayer cards have been made by Jae and Gus at the Big Wheel Press and include a short passage from transgender activist June Miller and poet Lara Rodriguez. Click Workspace premieres Click Music series with offbeat “Exploratory Devices,” featuring George Langford and Noam Schatz

Click Workspace’s new home on Market Street was built to not only serve its growing coworking community, but to help fill the void in small performance venues in downtown Northampton. Since last spring, Click’s flexible, artwork-filled space has been serving the need for 100-seat and smaller rooms with a growing roster of performance and literary events. Now the venue introduces its own series, Click Music, which invites audiences to up-close encounters with artists experimenting with their music making.

Click Music premieres on Thursday, January 26th in the first floor event space at 9 ½ Market Street. The 7:00 p.m. concert, themed “Exploratory Devices,” features a double-bill shared by George Langford (Javelin) and Noam Schatz’s 3rdness. Click Music is curated by Anand Nayak and sponsored in part by Downtown Sounds.

Armed with several Critter & Guitari Kaleidoloops, George Langford of the band Javelin creates textural sonic collages and invites you join in this rare, hands-on and improvisatory affair. Langford began Javelin with his cousin Tom Van Buskirk in 2005, and their eclectic music focuses mostly on a mellow electro-pop/80s-synth style. The band has played hundreds of events, including Lollapalooza. Their production techniques have a history of fostering audience participation, and that will also be encouraged in Langford’s solo “Exploratory Devices” set.

3rdness is the nom de noise of Noam Schatz, a veteran of the Valley music scene, usually found behind the drums of rock and rolling bands such as The Capitulators and Endless Mike (in former lives, Schatz has played with local luminaries Mobius Band, Meathawk and the Meathawks, The Sometimes, and the Sun Parade). Circuit bending is the art of destruction, purposefully breaking toy keyboards and drum machines until they unveil compelling new sounds. The juggling and tossing of stray electrons. The weaving and warping of synthetic tones and noises. There is an inherent unpredictability in the circuit bent instruments, making them a perfect medium for the improviser. Once the music begins, not even the electrons know how it will turn out.

Tickets are available at the door for $10 cash. Beer and wine will be available. Event information is available at http://clickworkspace.org.
