Patience, diligence, and intimate knowledge of my subject matter are the keys to capturing nature on film, which is the only medium I employ. Often I photograph a subject over several years before I am satisfied.
Natural light is my tool—I do not artificially light the subject –and I never add anything to a scene to improve it. As a naturalist, I use photography as an interpretive tool – a means of increasing environmental awareness among our citizenry. I take care to photograph my subjects as I see them, skillfully using light at appropriate times to achieve my goals.

I think attitude has a lot to do with one’s photographic results. Granted, proper equipment and techniques play a major role. But if one takes a picture just to show one’s prowess with a camera, as opposed to feeling something for the subject while recording it on film, the results are born out in the final product.
I prefer to photograph smaller organisms on their own level. I make a practice of thanking my subject, be it moose, spider, or tree, for allowing me a photographic opportunity because I am displeased with man’s domineering attitude towards earth’s other inhabitants.
Before departing a subject, I observe the area quietly to appreciate the opportunity I have just experienced.
Natural beauty surrounds us, whether in the most prestigious national park or our own back yard. Being mindful of this has afforded me many photographic opportunities.
