Four Sundays in February
Our February series, which the local newspaper, the Daily Hampshire Gazette called "the showpiece of indoor winter entertainment in Northampton", is an example of our vision of artistic excellence. The series was started in 1993 and begins and ends with two shows that have become enormously popular community arts events, The Silver Chord Bowl and the Really Big Show. The box office and business support for these two shows allow us to experiment with innovative programming during the second and third week.

The Silver Chord Bowl is a collegiate a cappella singing showcase that we co-sponsor with the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce. This show sells out every year and is especially popular with senior citizens and with what is euphemistically referred to as "old Hamp", those long-time community members who remember the Bowl from when it was part of the Chamber of Commerce's now defunct Winter Carnival. The Bowl is our primary link with Smith College and the Five College Community. The event has become so popular we have moved it from the 800-seat Academy of Music Theater to the 2,000 seat John M. Greene Hall on the Smith College campus. |

The Really Big Show, the finale to the performance, while always a crowd pleaser, also helps local performers develop their audiences and gives them a remarkable venue. This last weekend is a variety show jam-packed with local talent. The show seeks to celebrate the many local artists. Each year, a different individual MC's the show by impersonating Ed Sullivan. Past shows have included artists such as musician Beverly "Guitar" Watkins, choreographer Anthony Rodriguez', visual artist Eric Carle, Tsidii Le Loka, Broadway phenom from South Africa, and dancer/choreographer/actor Richard Move. For more information of past events feel free to e-mail the Northampton Arts Council at arts@ci.northampton.MA.US. |
