The Northampton Arts Council is a city board and a non-profit organization whose goal is to support and promote the arts in Northampton. Originally created as a Local Arts Lottery Council, it began its work by administering a grants program in which proceeds from a state lottery are distributed to local artists, arts groups, and public schools.

Instrument Grant

The NAC’s Musical Instrument Grant was established to provide support to Northampton’s most promising young musicians. Every year, the NAC’s Musical Instrument Grant will select one high school student in Northampton, based on teacher recommendations, and provide that student funds to purchase a pre-professional to professional level instrument. The selection process is based on musical accomplishment, as well as financial need.

The price of a quality education is on the rise, with total costs topping $30,000 a year, on average. For young people heading to music school, these costs can be increased by as much as $5,000 when figuring in the cost of an instrument of high enough quality for music schools and conservatories. For these students, a quality instrument isn’t a luxury; it is a necessity. Finding the right instrument, one with the sound, sensitivity, and complexity that a budding young musician needs, is essential to any student’s musical growth.

Partnerships with Local Music Stores

The NAC’s Musical Instrument Grant is proud to have received enthusiastic support from a number of the local music stores. Support comes in the form of generous discounts to the grant recipient. These stores include Downtown Sounds, Birdhouse Music, Stammell Stringed Instruments, and Fretted Instruments Workshop. By working with local stores, the NAC’s Musical Instrument Grant not only benefits local students, but benefits local businesses too.
