Northampton, MA--Applications and newly revised guidelines are now available from the Northampton Arts Council for grants under the Massachusetts Cultural Council's Arts Lottery and Field Trip Grant program. The Northampton Arts Council will be distributing up to $9,080 of this state allocated grant money during this funding cycle in the following categories: dance, film/video, literature, mixed media, music, Field Trip Grant Program, schools, theater, and visual arts. Projects may start no earlier than January 1, 2013, and must be completed by December 30, 2013....

Miro Sprague Plays Farewell Concert at Center for the Arts

Jazz pianist and composer Miro Sprague will appear in a solo farewell concert at the Center for the Arts on Friday, August 17 at 7:30 pm. A Valley native who is admired for his inspired creativity and dynamic performance style, Miro began performing at the age of 14 and has since been wowing audiences everywhere with his unique take on modern jazz. At the end of August, he's off to the Thelonious Monk Institute, a prestigious jazz masters program at UCLA directed by the legendary Herbie Hancock....

This October, the Northampton Arts Council and the city of Northampton invite area artists to celebrate and reflect on the essential qualities and importance of water in conjunction with a new public art project on the Route 9 railroad bridge. Artist and photographer David Teeple is creating this new installation titled ‘Water Music.’ The focus of the Northampton Arts Council’s juried exhibition at the Hosmer Gallery, ‘Follow the River,’ provides a conceptual framework that directly engages with the innovative power, beauty, and scope of art inspired by water....

The Northampton Arts Council is re-opening the competition for a new public art project which will be located on the railroad trestle bridge over Rt. 9, near Market Street. The selected piece will replace Leland Johnston’s “Dream” mural, which was installed through a similar process in 1991. The Arts Council board accepted the recommendation of the public art selection committee comprised of artists, business people, and educators to begin the process anew after the artist chosen during the initial competition decided to withdraw his project....

Greene Hall on October 26, 2010 for a dynamic staged reading and concert of Expatriate. Written by Northampton Poet Laureate and Smith alum Lenelle Moïse (MFA '04), this critically-acclaimed two-woman play launched Off-Broadway in 2008. As Expatriate enters a new phase of developm ent for touring, the Pioneer Valley will catch a sneak peak of this “freshly imaginative” (New York Post) and uncompromising look at the complexities of fame, sexuality and artistry. 5 Finalists Selected for New Public Art on the Railroad Trestle Bridge

The Northampton Arts Council is pleased to announce that the Review Committee has selected 5 finalists from at field of 16 artists for new public art on the railroad trestle bridge. David Gengler, Mary Kasper, Lisa Leary, Ali Osborn and Jena Sujat and Jamie Haskins from Chartpak, Inc joined Bob Reckman, from Ward 3 who had been with the project from the beginning. This committee will have an initial review the finalist proposals on Tuesday April 6, 2010. The Selection Committee will announce their final decision in mid-May....

The Northampton Arts Council, Inc. is once again running a special, locally supported arts grant round. This spring the Arts Council will be awarding up to $20,000. This money was raised at last summer's Transperformance 19: LookStock and the recent Four Sundays in February ’10 series. These grants are available to area writers, painters, photographers, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, schools, and all other creatives and arts organizations for projects held in Northampton....

This year’s 18th annual Four Sundays in February 2010 series produced by the Northampton Arts Council proved to be an outstanding success, with a total of over 4,000 people in attendance throughout the month. The line up this time around included several collegiate a cappella groups such as the Tufts Beezlebubs, New Century Theatre’s performance of  the Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), and the award winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus and tap dance troupe, The Young Hoofers. The series closed with local radio personality, Kelsey Flynn, impersonating Ed Sullivan in the The Really Big Show, a rendition of the classic variety show. Proceeds from this series go to benefit local artists in the form of grants. Hi--Both my husband and I were at Woodstock-We arrived Friday and left Monday am. Somewhere we have our tickets we never turned in. W A few things we remember  are the incessant rain, the mud, mist on the cornfields and Jimmy Hendrix performing the national anthem early, early Monday am--we could hear it on our way to the site and wondered what/who it was.    I have more memories if you'd like.   We ended up getting married  4 years later and are running the family farm, Clarkdale.--Becky Clark...

Northampton Arts Council Announces Arts EZ 2009 Grant Award Winners

The Northampton Arts Council is pleased to announce the awarding of 23 Arts EZ Spring 2009 grants totaling $15,000 in support of a variety of projects. The caliber of applications this round was outstanding, and we were unable to fund many worthy projects. The Arts Council received 37 requests for funding over $55,000. These grants were awarded from a pool of funds raised by the Northampton Arts Council’s Transperformance 18 (August 2008) and Four Sundays in February ’09 series. These grants were awarded in the following categories: Dance, Film/Video, Literature, Mixed Media, Music, Theater and Visual Art....

The Northampton Arts Council will present LANDSCAPE: SCENE AND UNSEEN, a biennial juried exhibition of two and three-dimensional work and performance art at the Hosmer Art Gallery, and on the Forbes Library front lawn in October 2009.  While landscape is often restricted to habitat, we also encourage what might be called “inscape”—a view into the artist’s interior environment.
