Image and Ritual: Selected Work by Anna Bayles Arthur, 2005 - 2015
Exhibition Dates: August 11 thru 23.
Artist reception, Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, 5 - 8 p.m. (Arts Night Out)
This exhibition presents a careful selection of work made over the span of a decade, a retrospective view of one artist's delvings into the ancient and meditative act of image construction. The body of work reveals the evolution of a unique visual vocabulary, landscapes of memory, dream, and invention. Each piece is the result of an intuitive process, a playful tug between figure and ground. Layers of transparent pigments become the atmosphere through which forms float or sit, emerge or disintegrate. Within this atmosphere, there is an explicit organicism that is both familiar and unfamiliar: biology, landscape, underwater worlds, things mechanical, parts of composite bodies. These constructed relationships reveal narratives that echo the drama of our human experience and the intricate movements of the natural world.
