The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

Northampton Jazz Workshop features guest vocalist Nicole Pasternak

Northampton Jazz Workshop features guest vocalist Nicole Pasternak and tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama Tuesday, August 4th, 7:30 to 8:30 PM followed by an open jazz jam until 10:30 PM, The Loft at the Clarion Hotel.

Vocalist Nicole Pasternak has built an appreciative audience in the Northeast with her honest, swinging voice and effortless attitude. In the spirit of singers like Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney and Anita O’Day, she shines on traditional Swing songs, renders heartfelt ballads, is a natural improviser, and performs her own compositions as well. said, “This sassy jazz singer has a beautiful, crystal clear tone and a bright manner that never obscures her impressive Bop chops.” When she teams up with her husband, Grammy-winning tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama, their musical menu is effectively spiced with arrangements for sax and voice. Ms. Pasternak performs monthly with the Hartford Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of pianist/conductor Donn Trenner.

Ralph Lalama is a three-time Grammy winner through his work in the Joe Lovano Nonet and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He has nine CDs out as a leader and is on more than sixty recordings as a sideman. He has received praise from the likes of critics Gary Giddins, Stanley Crouch, Ben Ratliff, Ira Gitler and Stuart Troup, among others. His latest release as a leader is the 2012 “Bop Juice: Ralph Lalama Trio, Live at Smalls.”
