The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

An installation of graphics and manipulated chairs based on the quote " One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic." Often attributed to Joseph Stalin, the original saying is in German, "Der Tod eines Menschen: das ist eine Katastrophe. Hunderttausend Tote: das ist eine Statistik! " from an essay called "French Wit," written by satirist and writer Kurt Tucholsky in 1932. The names of victims of two incidents in recent history, July 8, 2014 in Gaza, Beit Hanoun, Khan Younis, Jabalia and Rafah and April 2, 2015 in Garissa, Kenya. 24 Palestinians and 147 Kenyan and other African students died suddenly and violently on those dates.

Phil Lawrence is an artist/ teacher/ builder living and working in Western Massachusetts. He teaches drawing and sculpture at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Ma. He has worked in various disciplines including painting, sculpture, installation art, theater and writing.
