The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

Classical Music Concert: Frederic Chiu, Pianist
Sweeney Concert Hall in Sage, Smith College

Frederic Chiu, pianist, is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Petscheck Award of the Juilliard School, and was a fellow of the American Pianist Association. He was also the "non-winner" of the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition, where his elimination from the finals caused an uproar in the press. He performs in the most prestigious concert halls around the world and currently has over 20 CDs on the market. Mr. Chiu will be presenting “Classical Smackdown”, a multi-year series where composers face off in head-to-head comparisons, with the audience voting for their preferred composer! The Smackdown this season is between Debussy and Prokofiev. Two of Mr. Chiu’s favorite composers, come and hear him perform their work back-to-back and cast your Vote! Results are being tracked at ClassicalSmackdown.com.
