Turners Falls artists Fafnir Adamites and Neil Young Cloaca collaborate on this show of large-scale, interactive paper and sound sculptures. Inspired by the state of being in-between or at a transitional threshold, this series of inhabitable paper structures create spaces of isolation for the participant. Inside each discrete node, a speaker emits its own sound of reflection. The paper membrane is a temporary point of contact and separation that like a speaker, both receives and transmits.
Using feltmaking and other traditional craft processes, Fafnir Adamites creates sculptural works that act as monuments and reminders of trauma, intuition and the legacy of emotional turmoil inherited from past generations. Embedding meaning in both the materials and the repetitious processes plays a key role in building the conceptual backing of each piece. Fafnir holds an MFA degree from the Fiber and Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Photography and Women’s Studies from UMass Amherst. www.fafniradamites.com
Neil Young Cloaca makes sounds, images, and events that celebrate intentionally unstable systems, clumsiness, and improvisation, in the uncomfortable space between humor and menace. Cloaca's primary outputs are sound recordings and videos, circulated through a variety of underground recording labels and microcinemas. In addition he maintains a brisk performance schedule, touring regionally and internationally, as well as thoughtfully programming events that showcase artists touring from afar. www.yeay.suchfun.net
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Northampton Arts Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
