Curia
Charlotte Kohlmann
35mm film photographs printed on inkjet paper

This past summer, I re-traced my paternal grandmother's diary which chronicles her escape from Europe during World War II. I was able to visit the small town of Curia, Portugal which my grandmother described as a dull place "with nothing to do but take walks". Curia did not seem any different from her very description when I visited over seventy-five years later. I did not see or interact with any passersby; I could only take long, solitary walks. The Grand Hotel, pictured here, is the very hotel the Portuguese government temporarily housed refugees in and is where my grandmother and her family stayed. The hotel is now abandoned, with all of its furniture still intact. The heat from the various airport x-rays partially melted the film's cellulose and affected its development. In a way, the town reflects just how the film captured it.
