A.P.E. presents its summer series: ARC.18 (Activate, Research, Create)
A.P.E.‘s third season of summer projects continues to expand the understanding of a contemporary art gallery as an active space within the community. A.P.E.’s current location in the center of Northampton, easily accessible to artists and audience alike, provides opportunities for innovative programming and increases the presence of contemporary arts within a community. ARC.18 consists of four distinct projects that run from June through August, 2018.
Project 3: “THE SPACE BETWEEN: WEAVING AND FIBROUS CONNECTION”
The A.P.E. Ltd Gallery is very pleased to present an exhibition of new and varied works featuring local artists Sarah Rose Lejeune, Anastatia Spicer, and Claire Hawley Crews.
Three hand-weavers whose work treads a line between craft and conceptual art will create an exhibition at A.P.E. that includes site-specific handwoven sculptures, fibrous drawings, and reflections on cloth-making today. These tactile manifestations create new ways of building kinship and connection, cultivating curiosity around how the process of hand-weaving serves as a metaphor for alternative ways of being in relation to one another. Patrons will be invited to weave with the artists on a loom in the gallery as well as interact with the work through sound installations.
About the Artists:
Sarah Rose Lejeune is a papermaker, weaver, sculptor, printmaker from Massachusetts. She graduated with High Honors in Studio Art from Oberlin College in May of 2015. She has been fairly itinerant since then, following various opportunities at The Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, OH, The Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY, The Dirt Palace in Providence, RI, Dieu Donné in Brooklyn, NY, and more.... She is currently a Core Fellow at the Penland School of Crafts in Western North Carolina.
Anastatia Spicer is a conceptual hand-weaver, seamstress and critical theorist with a BA from Hampshire College. She believes that we are in desperate need to imagine creative new ways of being in relation to one another, our environment and objects in our lives. Her way of going about this is through her artistic as well as teaching practice of handwork which grows alongside, through and within her academic and philosophical research on fibers role in our lives. Her current body of academic and artistic work is concerned with the fibrous knowledge cloth carries as a record of the ways fibers touch and are touched by the world.
Claire Hawley Crews is a weaver and printmaker. Crews has completed internships at Zea Mays Printmaking Studio, Big Wheel Press, Highpoint Center for Printmaking and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She received her BA from Hampshire College in 2015. Claire’s work interrogates digital technologies, memory and documentation, intimacy and ambiguity, from a growing technical knowledge of textile craft and intaglio printmaking.
