WGBY to Host Its Annual Masterpiece-Themed Gala

WHAT: WGBY's Annual Masterpiece-Themed Gala
WHEN: Saturday, January 19, 2019, 6:00PM
WHERE: The Log Cabin, 500 Easthampton Road, Holyoke, MA

The public television station’s WGBY Masterpiece Ball fundraiser offers a four-course meal, live ballroom orchestra, and elegant dancing while celebrating the popular period drama, “Victoria.”

Drama-lovers and PBS supporters across the Pioneer Valley are getting ready to “Dress Up, Dine and Dance” at a Victorian-themed fundraiser for public media.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, the 2019 WGBY Masterpiece Ball returns to the Log Cabin in Holyoke. The period gala celebrates the popular Masterpiece series “Victoria” while providing a fancy night out for couples and groups.

The WGBY Masterpiece Ball ( begins at 6 p.m. as guests arrive in their glamourous outfits — attendees are encouraged to dress in their best Victorian ballroom attire to compete for prizes (including best male and female costumes and most creative costume) or in elegant evening wear.

In the reception room, a champagne toast and dance demonstration performed by the Vintage Dance Society will set the stage. Then, a pipe and drum procession will lead guests to make merry with “Victoria in the Scottish Highlands."

In the Log Cabin’s main ballroom, a four-course, candlelit dining experience will follow, complete with complimentary wines courtesy of Terroir Wine Group.  Attendees will then take to the dancefloor for the festive sounds of the 12-piece WGBY Ballroom Orchestra under the direction of Jeffrey Holmes, featuring special guest vocalist Dawning Holmes.

“Masterpiece is such an iconic PBS drama series. It’s just perfect for a WGBY party,” says Marie Waechter, WGBY’s Director of Community Relations and Events. “This is our second Victoria-themed WGBY Masterpiece Ball. The first several were based on Downton Abbey. We continue to get such an enthusiastic response.”

According to Waechter, the planning for this year’s event included input from a volunteer “advisory group” of local Victoria enthusiasts. “These are folks who love Masterpiece and love WGBY. So, their extensive input was invaluable. They suggested using the Scottish Highlands setting from Season 2, Episode 7 as a backdrop to the “Victoria” theme. The menu also reflects Scottish influence.”

A silent auction will take place throughout the event. It will feature donated experiences, art pieces, and more — all to help raise funds for WGBY, public television for western New England. “We’ll be featuring some beautiful pieces and fun things to do, including a golf outing and maybe a getaway or two,” Waechter says. “It’s a great way to support WGBY.”

For WGBY General Manager Anthony V. Hayes, the WGBY Masterpiece Ball also represents community. “Of course, we welcome the support needed to help us continue our educational content and service to the region,” he says. “But this event is also a wonderful night to dress up, be with friends, to make new friends, to dance, and to start the new year off with a smile.”

There are two ticket levels available for the “Victoria”-themed WGBY Masterpiece Ball:
Gentry (General Admission) — $125
Royalty (Patron Ticket, includes Special Seating & Gift Bag) — $200

Tickets are available for purchase online at or by contacting Marie Waechter at 413-781- 2801, Ext. 1547 or Inquiries regarding seating arrangements or group ticket sale questions can also be directed to Marie Waechter.

The 2019 WGBY Masterpiece Ball is sponsored by PeoplesBank. AM Lithography is a media sponsor. Special thanks to the Log Cabin, Terroir Wine Group, Mole Hollow Candles, and the Vintage Dance Society.
