Northampton Chalk Art Festival returns to celebrate tenth anniversary in Downtown Northampton on September 13, 2019.
The Downtown Northampton Association presents the 10th Annual Northampton Chalk Art Festival, featuring professional artists and a community free-draw for all ages.
On Friday, September 13, walkways on and off Main Street will explode with color during the 10th annual Northampton Chalk Art Festival.
Professional artists and talented amateurs will create their own unique designs from 10am to 4pm. The public is encouraged to watch chalk art pieces develop, and to view completed work in the evening while enjoying Northampton’s monthly Arts Night Out gallery walk from 5-8pm. Cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 will be awarded by a panel of judges for the top three creations. Presentations will be made by the Mayor on the steps of City Hall at 5pm.
The public is also invited to an informal family free draw from 5-7pm behind Thornes Marketplace in the Tuesday Market spot. Plenty of sidewalk chalk will be on hand for anyone who wants to take part in the activity!
“Our hope is to make the public spaces in our downtown a space for art and creativity, and the Chalk Art Festival is a wonderful way to celebrate that ideal,” said Amy Cahillane, DNA Executive Director,.
Individual chalk artists for 2019 feature former prize winners and seasoned competitors, including Rob Kimmel, Linda Babcock and Robert Markey, as well as numerous new artists.
Chalk art sites are situated along the customary Arts Night Out route, as well as other downtown locations (including Center Street and King Street) so that viewers also have an opportunity to stop at participating galleries and other venues. Festival locations include the Smith College Museum of Art, Forbes Library, Pulaski Park, A2Z Science & Learning Store, Bela, Thornes Marketplace, dmg, Woodstar Cafe and Click Workspace. Maps of the chalk art locations, along with their assigned artists, are available at www.northamptondna.com and printed copies will be distributed by a variety of Arts Night Out venues.
The Northampton Chalk Art Festival is sponsored by Thornes Marketplace, the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Whalen Insurance Agency and the Northampton Radio Group. It is produced by the Downtown Northampton Association in cooperation with the City of Northampton.
