The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

Dwellings Arts Festival Comes To Northampton With A Focus On Community, The Arts, and Safety

Dwellings Arts Festival comes to The Northampton Center For The Arts on October 12, 2019 from 1PM-11PM. Dwellings is a one-day festival that brings together poetry, music, visual art, and workshops that explore ideals of community, safety, identity, inclusivity, and radical vulnerability. This event is presented in partnership with Lucky’s Tattoo & Piercing and The Valley Advocate. Tickets are available at

Dwellings is an organization and event celebrating interdisciplinary artwork and performances with a focus on community engagement and growth, founded with values of ethics and equal representation at the forefront. Their goal is to create greater equity of opportunities and access to resources and community support for artists from underrepresented groups. They also believe that raising awareness around issues that affect artists, such as union representation, fair pay, ethical artist/venue relationships, and safe venue practices will make our local art and music scene a safer and more supportive space for all artists and arts appreciators.

There will be 3 stages, a workshop room, and vendor spaces set up all over The Northampton Center for The Arts during the first ever Dwellings Arts Festival. The poets featured at this year’s festival are Clementine Von Radics, Nicole Young, Mishie Serrano, Sara Cowell, and the interdisciplinary group Dirty Words. Combined, these poets have over a million views on youtube and range from self-published students, to local up and comers, to widely acclaimed international slam competition winners. Dwellings is currently holding an open call for high-school poet submissions to open the festival with a short set of original work.

The musicians who will be performing at Dwellings span a wide range of genres and are Wendy Eisenberg, Izy Coffey, Diana Alvarez, Sodada, S#arp Attitude, Ananda Luna and Rajna Swaminathan’s Mangal. This line up of musicians is a true showcase of diverse sounds and intricate songwriting that is sure to inspire all in attendance. Joining the musicians in the Flex Space will be Brie Martinz creating live visual art throughout the day.

In addition to these incredible performers the festival is thrilled to host six riveting workshops;

● Blizzard: Juggling the Identity of Part-Time Activist, Full-Time High School Snowflake

● Locating Me: Understanding the Self Through Reflexive Writing and Performative Narrative

● Black Femme Survival

● Practices of Women and Nonbinary and Genderqueer Artists of Color

● Labyrinth Through Fear: Follow the Bird

● An Open Conversation on Performance Anxiety.

The local makers and vendors that will be on site for this event are Luminary Designs, The Mandala Goddess, Nicco Aldo, Adora LaRoche Art, GrllBlk, Brie Martinz Art, Forbidden Forest Art, Bone Flower Botanikals, Norwood Essentials, Shan Cahill, Nashia Douglas, Input/Output Magazine, Sarina Hahn, and Terra Metaphysics. There will also be food and drink options on site for purchase.

In addition to great music, poetry, workshops, and shopping; Dwellings will be hosting an open mic on our outdoor stage amongst all of our community tabling! Bring your instrument, original poetry, performance art, or short comedy act to share! Collaboration is encouraged. Outdoors there will also be a photo booth and a station set up for attendees to write a letter to a creative (famous or not) who has inspired them or changed their life. These letters will be included in Dwellings Arts’ first anthology, to be released this Winter.
