The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

Northampton Newspaper Box Vinyl Wrap Project



The Northampton Arts Council is looking for photographers and digital artists to submit work for consideration for the Newspaper Box Public Art Program. Selected artists will have their photos or digital art printed on Vinyl and wrapped around newspaper boxes in downtown Northampton.

This project is designed to encourage community pride and beautify the streets of Northampton, Massachusetts. Murals will be installed in public places and must be suitable for viewing by all ages. The Arts Council anticipates selecting artwork from 8 photographers or digital artists and will pay selected artists $350 per image.


The deadline for the application is September 20th, 2021, at 11:59 PM EST.

Selected artists will be notified by September 28th, 2021.


Eligibility
This project is open to all photographers and digital artists. The Commission encourages applications from both new and established artists. Artists may apply as an individual artist or as a group. Group submissions may be for a single newspaper box.

Selection Process & Criteria
Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee from the Northampton Arts Council. Once the artwork is selected, the committee will send a notification by email.

Criteria used to select artists will be:
• Evaluation of artistic excellence including quality of the art and photographs;
• Creative and innovative concepts; and
• Appropriate regard for the nature of the space and the audience.

Image submission details:


Please upload 3-5 web ready images for consideration in the application. Images should be in a rectangular format. Images should be 1MB or less.


Images can be 8 inches wide by 5 inches tall, since final image should be 80 inches long by 50.75 inches tall.


Submitted work can be photographs or digital designs that the artists already have in their portfolio as long as they will be print ready files like specified below.


If selected - Final Print ready files should be 300DPI and the image size should be 80” long x 50.75” tall. These files will get transferred through Wetransfer if the artist is selected since they are large format.

Newspaper Box Images:

Below you will find a photograph of the newspaper box in which the artist will have their image printed on.

As you can see, the Vinyl will wrap all the way around both sides and the back of the newspaper box. Artists should think about how and if their submitted image will work within this presentation.

The length of the back of the box is 48 inches long and the height is 50.75 inches.
The right side of the box is 16 inches long and 50.75 inches tall.
The left side of the box is 16 inches long by 50.75 inches tall.

If selected, final submitted image should take all three measurements into account, making the final image size 80 inches long by 50.75 inches tall.




How to Apply

All materials should be submitted through the Newspaper Box Vinyl Wrap Application. Proposals will be reviewed by the Northampton Arts Council. All items must be included as part of the submission package or applications will not be reviewed.
