The Northampton Arts Council works to support and nurture the arts in the city of Northampton. The Council awards grants twice each year to artists and arts groups from both state and locally-raised funds, and seeks to improve public awareness of the arts. Its' goals include maintaining and preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Northampton, programming such annual events of interest to the community as First Night Northampton and Transperformance.

WHAT: LOCULUS Collective presents SIDEWAYS DOOR II: a weekend of ecstasies & escape routes WHEN: June 23rd-25th, 2023
WHERE: Holyoke, Northampton and Greenfield, MA.  

SIDEWAYS DOOR II is the second semi-annual festival celebrating multi-disciplinary performance, process and practice organized by LOCULUS. The festival takes place at multiple venues throughout the Pioneer Valley and brings together local and regional dancers, sound and video artists, and poets for three days of performances, classes, and workshops. LOCULUS is a dance collective based in Holyoke, MA whose work encompasses movement based performance, curation, and education. They have performed throughout New England often in collaboration with experimental musicians. In addition to their performance and curatorial work they direct LOCULUS Studios in Holyoke. SIDEWAYS DOOR II is supported in part by grants from the Northampton Arts Council and Greenfield Local Cultural Council, local agencies which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Friday June 23rd
kicks off at 7pm with a performance featuring dance works by Karinne Keithley Syers, Laila J. Franklin, LA Samuelson, and Leah Fournier + Amelia Hientzleman in the brand new black box studio theater at Holyoke Media. Following the performance join us around the corner at Fame Lounge/Eatery for a festival kick off party. The kitchen and bar will be open and DJ Matt Krefting will be spinning records to dance to. 

Saturday June 24th begins with two master classes at LOCULUS Studios in Holyoke; improvisation with Jungwoong Kim and contemporary movement with Laila J. Franklin. Saturday evening the festival moves to Northampton to the Anchor House of Artists. The evening will feature performances by sound artists AJ Cornell and Elsa; movement based works by LOCULUS with the Baldwin/Gelineau/Meginsky trio, and Josie Bettman; and video works by Otis Wheeler, Wendy Woodson, and Tyler Rai. 

Sunday June 25th is the culminating day of the festival. Join us for a community book making workshop at Looky Here in Greenfield, MA hosted by LOCULUS with Sarah Lanzilotta from 12-3:30 pm followed by short readings by local poets Max Gonen, Sammy Lê, Caroline Rayner, Brendan McCauley, Jayson Keery, and Dāshaun Washington.
