Harriet Diamond’s installation “Besieged” will be on view at the A.P.E. Gallery at 126 Main St. in Northampton, MA from Nov. 12 - Dec. 12.  The Opening Reception is on Fri., Nov. 13 from 5 – 8 pm, Arts Night Out.

On Saturday, December 5 from 2-4 pm a panel of 3 Palestinian speakers will talk about the conditions in Gaza and how we can help. Location TBD.

“Besieged” is an installation portraying the last four years of war on Gaza.  Harriet has created a gallery-wide installation which imagines Gaza now. Her impressions are gathered and distilled from photo and print journalism, eyewitness reports, and the poetry of Palestinian and Jewish authors.

Entering the 24 ft by 45 ft installation, the visitor comes among 25 life-size figures and numerous small figures. Looming on the gallery walls and surrounding the space fully are floor to ceiling paintings of the destroyed city of Gaza.

Harriet Diamond has crafted a work resonating with the sadness, pain, courage and pride of these beleaguered people. She says, “As I sculpt these faces from Gaza, I wonder, is this child, mother, father still alive? It may feel like too much to engage with such hurt and our own culpability, but in the act of killing we have inextricably bound ourselves to these Gazans.”

Harriet has installed her pieces at Brookgreen Garden (SC), the National Sculpture Society (NYC), the Albany Museum (NY); the Fitchburg Museum, the Berkshire Museum, the Springfield Museum, and at Chesterwood, the National Trust (Mass).  She has received the Mass. Cultural Council’s Artist Fellowship Grant and a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.  She resides in Northampton, MA.
