Self-Evident: Fall of Freedom—A Documentary Short Double Feature & Discussion
Self-Evident Education is joining the nationwide Fall of Freedom movement with a documentary double feature and participatory discussion on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 3-5 PM at the Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity, 130 Pine St., Florence, MA.
The screening will feature two short films — If Knowledge is the Key and Freedom’s Battle at Christiana — exploring how race and racism were intentionally built into the early U.S. legal system and legacies of that history, as well as resistance to systemic racism. If Knowledge is the Key explores the story of a bi-racial woman in 1600's Virginia and her suit for freedom.
Freedom’s Battle at Christiana, produced for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, tells the story of an organized and armed resistance in Christiana, PA in 1851, against the Fugitive Slave Act, which stated that people in “free states”, were obligated to help return enslaved people to their enslavers. A discussion moderated by Michael Lawrence-Riddell (Self-Evident Education Executive Director), Ibrahim Ali (Self-Evident Education Organizational Strategist), and Professor Ousmane Power-Greene will follow.
A $10 suggested donation is encouraged, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
This event is sponsored by Self-Evident Education and co-sponsored by Bombyx, the David Ruggles Center for History and Education and the Northampton Arts Council.
Tickets are available at bombyx.live/events/self-evident-fall-of-freedom/.
