CitySpace presents
"Acting Class" with Dame Judi Dentures and Friends

November 14 and 15 at 8:00 PM
Blue Room at CitySpace: 43 Main Street, Easthampton, MA 01027

“Acting Class” with Dame Judi Dentures and Friends Doors

7:30pm | Show 8:00pm | 90 minutes

Acting Class with Dame Judi Dentures and Friends is part drag show, part theatrical monologue, and part interactive acting masterclass, taught by everyone’s favorite 1200-year-old drag grandma and featuring some delightful guest lecturers. Don’t miss this delicious, interactive evening at the intersection of clown and drag. Whether or not you are an aspiring actor, there’s something for everyone in this zany acting class for the ages.

“Judi has been brewing for a few years of my own life and 1200 years of her own mythology, so she has some perspective to share and shade to throw. It’s going to be a fun night, don’t miss it!" said Madden.

Guided by the one and only Dame Judi Dentures, a drag grandma clown with a passion for drama and unsolicited life advice, the show takes audiences on a riotous ride through a larger than life acting class. Expect queer clown chaos, multimedia fun, sassy puppets,  audience participation, delicious guest appearances, and deeply human silliness in a genre-defying performance that pokes fun at tradition while celebrating it.

Blending elements of drag, classical theater, clown, commedia dell’arte, and performance art, Madden uses the persona of Judi Dentures to dig into the hilarity and heartbreak of being alive. Equal parts workshop and performance, the evening will include participatory moments, improvisation, and heartfelt clown logic.

Patric Madden is an actor, director, and experimental drag performance artist based in Western MA. They studied English at Brown University and acting at the Yale School of Drama. They have performed at Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale Cabaret, UnitedSolo, Williamstown Theatre Festival, SpectrumNYC, Easthampton Theatre Company, Rattlestick Theatre, 3 Dollar Bill Brooklyn, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Emrooz Festival, Norfolk Festival, and other venues around the region. By day, Patric is a staff member at artEquity doing work at the intersection of arts and activism.

The Pay it Forward program is generously funded by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, Greenfield Savings Bank, Tandem Bagels, Applied Mortgage, Boston Rare Maps, Greenfield Cooperative Bank and Northampton Cooperative Bank, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Individual Donors.

NEXT TO NORMAL

Nov. 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.
The Rand Theater

There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in — Leonard Cohen

How do you hold onto reality amidst a whirlwind? Diana’s ordinary home-maker life of managing family dynamics and school lunches quickly disintegrates amid the twin challenges of bipolar disorder and grief. Meanwhile, her family members do their best to keep up under the strain of their own individual struggles.

Nov. 14-22, UMass Theater presents Next to Normal, a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical with music by Tom Kitt and book & lyrics by Brian Yorkey, that looks at the ripple effects of mental illness, stress, grief, secrets, and tremendous love. Tickets are on sale now for this poignant story, set to a driving rock score.

Director Kyle Boatwright, an MFA student at UMass and a frequent performer and director with several regional theater companies, says she was drawn to the way this piece "explores the love at the heart of everything."

"This is the story of a woman who struggles to balance the life she’s chosen with honoring her truest self—all while working to understand the effects her illness has on herself and on those she loves," Boatwright says, adding, "Nobody's reality is quite right in this family, until they're all brave enough to face a certain darkness and earnestly move toward a light."

Joining Boatwright on the creative team for this show is musical director Ben Kaplan '24, who returns to UMass Theater after working with various professional companies. Choreographer Holly Curran, meanwhile, is a former member of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, bringing her classical training to the genre-bending rock score of the musical.

Reserve your tickets now to join us in the Rand for this beautiful, powerful musical!
